Red Hot for the Holidays

BY DONNA FUJII

The Little Red Dress vs. The Little Black Dress

Recently in New York City, many of the ladies attending a major high-society gala wore red in place of the traditional black. This may be a sign of the times that the little red dress may be emerging as an acceptable alternative to the little black dress. Once reserved for the daring few who did not mind the romantic connotation of wearing it and wanting to stand out in a crowd, red has become a new classic that may be around for awhile.

"Red is the most dramatic color there is, so be prepared for all the attention and compliments that will come your way."

Red began its surge in popularity a few years ago when designers of apparel, handbags, hosiery, earrings and other accessories began to increase the number of products available in red. Since then, red has maintained its newfound popularity, and there are no signs it will be going away anytime soon.

If you have not worn red much in the past, Valentine's Day is the perfect time to start. Not only is red an in color, it is has always been closely associated with the holidays in American culture. Whether we are talking about Valentine's Day or Chinese New Year, red is definitely a great way to go this year.

So when putting your wardrobe together for those special events this year, be on the RED alert. Fortunately, there is a lot of red on the racks, in every shade imaginable. My suggestion is to pick something close to a true red, because then you can't go wrong! But be forewarned: Red is the most dramatic color there is, so be prepared for all the attention and compliments that will come your way. In red, your image will be exciting, fun-loving, and sexy, so why not play the part and have fun with it!

Power and Romance

Red can also be a power color, alongside black, navy and charcoal gray. Politicians who consult with image experts know that red helps to attract and hold the attention of an audience. As we know from watching the presidential debates, male politicians often wear neckties containing a strong, vivid red tie to go with their dark suits. In the office, reds can be worn in combination with almost any neutral colors, such as black, blue, white, and gray. Red also has a pop accent effect that always contrasts beautifully with dark conservative suits such as black, navy, gray or brown.

Feeling down because of those dreary, overcast days of winter? Your best cure is to put on a red coat, rain coat or jacket, which will lift your spirits and those of everyone you come into contact with. A red vinyl raincoat, spiked-heel patent leather shoes, mohair sweater or tartan plaid skirt, will instantly update your wardrobe and give you a fresh, new look.

Richard Gere is not the only hunk who loves a pretty woman in red. Color psychology tells us that red can connote sexuality, passion, and excitement. For your next anniversary or his next birthday, why not try a new red outfit, that is sure to add some spice to that special evening.
